About Us
The Boston Area Lung Cancer 5K Walk was initiated by Geri Norris and Richard Kaufman, both survivors of lung cancer. We as a committee aim to raise awareness, education, and much needed research dollars so that lung cancer is no longer America's silent killer. Together we CAN make a difference.
 |
Geri - Geri was diagnosed with limited Small
Cell Lung Cancer in November, 2001. Treated with chemotherapy
and radiation, she has been in remission since May 2002.
Geri has a husband, Richard, and daughter, Karen.
|
 |
Rich - Rich was diagnosed in May of 2002 with Non Small Cell Lung Cancer, Stage IV BAC. He underwent chemotherapy from Dec of 2002 to Dec of 2006. Rich passed away on November 25th, 2009 of unrelated causes. He leaves his wife Kathy and daughter Tina.

Stacey - "My dad, a retired firefighter, heeded
the health warnings and quit smoking 25 years before he
was diagnosed with lung cancer in September of 2005. He
died two weeks later. I am outraged at the lack of funding
for lung cancer research considering it is the number one
cancer killer, accounting for 31% of all cancer deaths.
I hope our walk will help raise awareness of the funding
inequities and alert people to this tremendous health threat."

|
Lisa - (Stacey's sister) "My Dad lived
a relatively healthy life, until he began to complain about
back pain. After visiting his doctor and running some tests,
he was diagnosed with Non Small Cell Lung Cancer, Stage
IV. He died 17 days later. My father lost two sisters to
lung cancer, and currently his brother is undergoing chemotherapy
for lung cancer."

 |
Karen - "I am committed to advocating more funding
and awareness for lung cancer. My mother, Geri, has not
only been in remission for over 4 years, she is committed
to NOT becoming a statistic! Our efforts will make a difference
so that people diagnosed with lung cancer will have the
support of new medicines and treatments."
|
| Rocco - "While watching my grandfather
fight ruthlessly with lung cancer, I accepted his fate.
Knowing my mother-in-law Geri, helped me realize that social
consciousness is key in providing patients with options.
The call for more funding equals more hope for the future
of lung cancer research."

Sylvia - "Until recently, I was one of the few lucky
people that had not come in contact with cancer, let alone
lung cancer. Neither a relative had ever been diagnosed
nor a good friend. This dreadful disease just wasn't on
my mind. This changed four years ago when I met Karen and
we became close friends. She told me about recently having
taken several months off from work to be with her mother,
Geri, who had just been diagnosed with lung cancer. Meeting
Geri shortly thereafter, and being a good friend of the
family, I have been emotionally touched over the years and
have been firsthand experiencing the impact a lung cancer
diagnosis and recovery have on the patient's loved ones.
"

Kathy - "Cancer is a dreadful disease,
but I believe that lung cancer is the most dreadful because
it is so often a silent killer. Only 16 percent of
lung cancer patients are diagnosed before their disease
has spread to other parts of their bodies! Since November
2000, this silent killer has taken both of my younger sisters,
Sandra and Maureen, as well as Maureen's husband Dennis
and his brother. I walk in their honor with the goals
of helping to promote the early detection of lung cancer
and funding research into possible genetic and gender factors
of this dreadful disease."
